Summer holidays are approaching and once again the cost of going on holiday has risen through the roof, making it impossible for some families to take their children away. We can't do anything about the weather so it's understandable that many opt to go abroad, apart from which, in many cases it works out cheaper to stay in a hotel in a popular holiday resort than it does to stay in a hotel over here. I'm all for keeping money circulating in this country and would quite happily never go abroad again, but this year I've bitten the bullet and booked a week's holiday for next year (August 2013) to this
RESORT in Kos. It's guaranteed to be hot, is a change of scenery and different culture to introduce Amy to. Some cottages in this area are nearly a thousand pounds a week to stay in; that is self-catering which means if you have a family of four to feed, you'll be spending a hell of a lot of money. One of our favourite holiday destinations is Center Parcs in Cumbria but it's pretty expensive there, too. It's a fabulous holiday but when weighing up the cost of a week just two and a half hours down the road, to a week 4 hours away on a plane, it proved a nice change to try somewhere different. Last year at CP, it rained for two whole days which meant outdoor activities were limited and the pool was packed. The way the weather is right now I'm not building my hopes up for a t'shirt and shorts week, but more for a mac with hood and don't-forget-your-umbrella week.
I really crave some sun, some gorgeous, guaranteed hot weather where we don't need to worry about packing thermals, socks and woolly cardigans - in the middle of summer. When I was in my late teens and all through my 20's, I used to love going abroad, visiting different countries, mainly holiday resorts but just a chance to feel the sun on my back.
There is always more to it of course, because unless you run a B&B, hotel or self-catering holiday accommodation yourself you won't understand the ins and outs of expenses this job incurs. But I think if British hoteliers/B&B owners/cottage owners were to reduce the cost of a week's holiday, especially during the summer months when the kids are off school, that more money would be generated through tourism in this country. This area in particular has two main income generators; tourism and farming. The place is always busy during school holidays but we've noticed in the past few years, how it isn't quite as busy as it used to be. Yet prices for accommodation are still rising. Surely something needs to be done.
I totally agree with you. Even a modest B&B costs an arm and a leg, plus you have all the expense of eating out which itself is not cheap.
ReplyDeleteYour holiday in Kos might not directly help the UK tourist industry but just think how good it is for the Greek economy. If you help them, you are supporting the Euro and the UK needs a stronger Europe. So you and Amy can lie on that beach, soak up the sun, and not feel guilty! :-))
ReplyDeleteAs someone that has only been abroad once and that was to Germany with the school, my parents could only afford UK caravan holidays. Now as a mum, we have no chance of going away anywhere as we are renovating the house (not through choice). Although visiting family is our holidays :)
ReplyDeleteYou're right sometimes it works out cheaper to go abroad than holiday in Britain and you are usually guaranteed sunshine. It's a no brainer really isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI so agree with everything you said in this post! The last time I went abroad was 4 years ago - on my honeymoon! My daughter is 14 and never been abroad. This was mainly due to sensory issues and her not being able to tolerate the plane. Now, we are working through those issues and she is desperate to go abroad. I would love her to experience something new. But, for us with 4 kids between us its impossible due to cost. So, we have for a number of years now been holidaying at home in the UK. But, as you have said, this is proving more and more expensive. The hire of a house can almost cost us £1000 for the week. Because it would prove too expensive to eat out every night we bring our own food. Not much of a rest for two over worked and stressed parents is it! Staying in the UK is now proving unattractive financially too! No hols for us this year!
ReplyDeletethe price of everything is going up and people cant afford to do what they once did for sure...we def cut corners...cook our own meals for one...we are traveling about 14 hours away from home this year, so there will be gas expense but have a free place to stay so...
ReplyDeleteLooks like a neat place to go! I went to look and clicked on Croatia...Wow! I didn't realise it was so beautiful...
ReplyDeleteHappy planning!

I love Greece and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. It'll give you something to look forward to next year. I agree about the prices of British holiday accommodation. It costs an arm and a leg, isn't half the standard you get abroad and you often get bad weather with it to boot. Why pay more to stay here when you can pay less to see something different. I am sure Amy will be thrilled.
ReplyDeleteso jel right now! can i come too? but yeah it is expensive that's why are having two t three trips out every week of the two weeks the mr has off :)

Has anyone visited Dubai? I think this is one of the best places for romantic vacation because it has some exceptional destinations where you can enjoy with your girlfriend or spouse.

We can't afford a holiday. Our last was about 5 years ago. We try to make something out of the school holidays with day trips around our region but with the price of diesel even these are becoming something of a luxury. We are fortunate that the 12 year old can run ferral in our village during the long summer nights with his friends but it's very difficult with J. He quickly tires of the village park and is difficult to drag away from his computer. I don't know, if the economy ever picks up again maybe we'll get some time away, but right now we'll be holidaying as ever chez Tynedale. Which if you have to holiday at home isn't a bad place to do it!
ReplyDeleteWhat about all those house-swap holidays I used to watch on tv? People seemed to have fun in the most ordinary of houses in the most unlikely places. I rented out my flat this Easter when we went to stay with my parents - it worked out well and provided us with the cost of our trip including spending money (remember we didn't have to pay for accommodation).
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, it is incredibly expensive to take a holiday, even within your own country... I like Midlife Singlemum's idea of doing a house swap type of holiday, that sounds great! :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy Kos - I'm jealous! With inlaws in Canada and Egypt, that seems to eat up all our vacation time. I may bite the bullet and book something special this year, though.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. Staycations, for want of a better word, are extortionate in the UK. Far cheaper to go elsewhere, even with the dodgy euro. I would love to go home to the UK more regularly but just can't afford it.
ReplyDeleteI've recently had UK TV installed and quite enjoy 4 in the bed (?) about B&Bs. I can't believe the prices some of them charge. I understand they are just charging the market rate, but the market rate is an absolute rip off !
When it comes to holidays, although the sun's always a draw, I love the UK, we've some fabulous hidden treasures and there are still lots of places on my list of Must-Visit-Sometime. Camping's my first choice, you can have a week's family holiday for around £100, and still change for the barbecue.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I'm sure you'll love Greece. Much of my youth was misspent island hopping around the Aegean and it still draws me back from time to time.
I'm looking for a holiday in the UK just now and it's extortionate. x
ReplyDeleteHolidays here tend to be pack up and take the caravan with us. Next year I am planning putting middler in respite for a week and taking the other two away for a week somewhere sunny that he wouldn't cope with. This year was too soon from him starting respite to having to stay there a whole week, but 2013, I think he will be ok about it.
ReplyDeleteSadly I think our days of heading to the Med will end this summer. It is just getting too expensive, and with the kids getting older I was thinking that some of the family-friendly festivals might be fun instead. But the pain is always not knowing how the weather will treat us. Enjoy Kos when you get there - I know what you mean about needing some sunshine!
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you for wanting to chase the sun abroad. English holidays can be expensive if you're not going camping or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI think it should be illegal to put up prices in the school holidays. After all....... you cannot take a child out of school for an early holiday unless going through a terrible rigmarole of red tape and disapproval from the head, so it doesn't seem fair at all.
